What is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messenger that replaces SMS and works through the existing internet data plan of your device. WhatsApp is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia S40 phones.

WhatsApp seems to be the same as SMS, but it’s not. WhatsApp can be used to share photos, movies, GIF’s, documents, location and audio with friends. It’s also possible to organize a groupchat. With voice and videocalls you can talk to your friends and family.

Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends.

WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted, which means that all your messages, calls and shared items are secured so only you and your contact can read, view or listen to them.

WhatsApp Inc. was founded in 2009 by Jan Koum en Brian Acton. Both worked for 20 years at Yahoo! Inc. before.

WhatsApp, a pun on “What’s Up?!”, begun with the idea to build a simple status function. After that the founders decided to create a better SMS alternative for smartphones.

In the meantime, WhatsApp has become one of the most downloaded apps ever! In 2018, more than 1,5 billion people around the world are using WhatsApp and this number is still growing.
